About the Island of Lanzarote

Lanzarote: the laid-back island in the sun

Tranquil Village Life

Lanzarote is the least mountainous of the seven Main Canary Islands and has the least annual rainfall. Its dry climate and hot sun are a reminder that Lanzarote is only 100 kilometres from the Sahara Desert. Frequent cooling breezes from the sea, however, make this island a beach lover's paradise, where temperatures average 70°F / 21°C year-round.
The landscape of the island is truly spectacular; a series of volcanic eruptions in the past has created an unforgettable sight of strange lava fields and wide craters, contrasting with a variety of dark and golden beaches. Pretty resort towns and villages dot the island with characteristic white and green painted buildings among gardens bright with colourful flowers.
There is lots to do as well. A holiday here is mainly centred on the seaside. Lanzarote is regarded as an excellent venue for windsurfing, snorkelling, diving, as there are some marvellous beaches and coves. However, Lanzarote does offer alternatives to the beach. Cycling, Trekking, Golf and sports fishing are popular pastimes.
Arrecife is the island's capital, with a modern shopping centre, promenade and many historical buildings. The 17thC Castle San Gabriel, now serves as a museum, while the Castillo de San Juan houses a modern art gallery and restaurant, overlooking the island's main docks which cater for merchant and cruise ships.
